Andersonville, GA
Andersonville Prison, also known as Camp Sumter, was one of the largest military prisons during the Civil War. During a 14 month period, over 45,000 Union soldiers were held at Camp Sumter. Almost 13,000 of these soldiers died while prisoners of war. These soldiers were laid to rest at Andersonville National Cemetery. Today Andersonville National Cemetery serves as a National Cemetery for present-day veterans.
The National Prison of War Museum in Andersonville opened in 1998. The museum is dedicated to American men and women who have suffered as prisoners of war.
